What's the Neediest Country of Them All? (Hint - Sudan)

ReliefWeb has just posted one of the most fascinating info-graphics I've ever seen, entitled Major Humanitarian Crises Requirements Snapshot.

Anyone who a) loves brightly colored graphics, b) is curious about which countries receive the most aid funding, and c) wants to know where humanitarian workers are most needed - i.e. where the jobs are - should definitely check it out.

(Granted, the title is a little staid.  So it goes.)

According to our graphically-inclined friends at ReliefWeb:

- There are a total of 43 million people worldwide who need humanitarian assistance

- The total cost of said assistance is $9.5 billion

- Sudan is home to the world's most extensive humanitarian operation, costing $2.1 billion a year.  Making it either the big winner or the big loser, depending on your perspective

- DR Congo is the next largest humanitarian operation, at $946 million a year, followed by Somalia ($849 million), the Occupied Palestinian Territory ($803 million), Zimbabwe ($719 million) and Afghanistan ($665 million)

- The country with the highest demand for aid workers was Afghanistan, with 831 job postings on ReliefWeb from January through August of this year, followed by Sudan (724), Congo (628), Kenya (443) and Pakistan (230).  For current ReliefWeb job vacancies, see here.
