Whoopi Goldberg Joins Fight Back NY to Support Marriage Equality

I straight-up love Whoopi Goldberg. I've read her books. I tape The View on a daily basis. And somewhere in my parent's house sits an autographed photo of the Whoopster herself. She's awesome.

I won't list the hundred or so reasons why I love Whoopi. But I'll list the most recent one: her new public service announcement, where she teams up with Fight Back NY to stand up for gay equality. It's a cause she continuously champions on her talk show, and the second time Whoopi has made a video like this.

“This is the U.S., and we're all supposed to be equal,” she says. “Keeping certain people not equal as Americans, kind of messes us up … you know, as Americans."

Released on Tuesday, the new Fight Back NY ad is part of a stepped up campaign in the Empire State to achieve marriage equality. The goal? To persuade the New York State Senate, which just tipped balance to Republican control, as well as incoming Governor Andrew Cuomo that it's time for marriage equality in the state. Indeed, a number of anti-equality Senators actually lost their seats this past Election Day, in large part because gay marriage advocates targeted them. Now the question becomes whether a marriage equality bill can move through a Republican-controlled State Senate, when zero Republicans voted for marriage equality last session.

The media blitz is backed by the Human Rights Campaign. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, Moby and Michael Bloomberg have all done ads. But there's no one who puts it out there quite like Whoopi.
