Will Women Become Criminals if Roe is Overturned?
Jill Miller Zimon, over at Writes Like She Talks, shares this video from the Winning Message Action Fund, a 501(c)4 nonprofit affiliated with NARAL Pro-Choice New York:
While the ad may come across as alarmist and swiftboating in it's tone, it brings up a difficult question. If Roe v. Wade was ever overturned, would women who needed an abortion for medical, financial, situations of rape, incest or other reasons be considered criminals?
I think the ad may be pushing the numbers when it says that "21 states would move to ban abortion immediately if Roe is overturned" but I think it is frighteningly true that states like Ohio would be plunged into a divisive battle over the future of legalized abortion within its borders and many others would severely limit a women's ability to choose and hinder her right to privacy.
The point of upholding Roe v. Wade is not only for a federal commitment to the right to privacy, but also for the precedent it created. If the legality of abortion was ever given to the states to decide, as proposed by John McCain, this would in effect make the federal decision moot.
For information on how you would be effected if Roe v. Wade was overturned, read through the National Conference of State Legislature's list of states that would uphold an abortion ban immediately and the dozens of states that would restrict a womens ability to choose.
