Yes, Laura Bush Is Better on Gay Marriage Than Barack Obama

Laura BushWhen Laura Bush's recent book became available, numerous reviewers and commentators pointed out that she dropped a bit of a bombshell on the subject of marriage equality. From all accounts, it seemed, Laura Bush supported the right of two women or two men to get married, and enjoy all the same benefits that heterosexual married couples get.

Well, end the speculation, because Laura Bush confirmed all of that last night on Larry King Live. It's now official: Laura Bush is better on gay marriage than President Barack Obama.

Think we can get Adam Bouska to line the former First Lady up for a No on H8 photo shoot?

In Laura Bush's mind, she can understand that religious conservatives have a strongly held belief that marriage is an institution that should only be the domain of heteros. She just disagrees.

"Well, I think we ought to look at gay marriage and debate it. A lot of people have trouble coming to terms with it, because they see marriage traditionally as a man and woman.  But I also know that when couples are committed to each other and love each other, they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has," Bush said.

When asked definitively if the U.S. could accept gay marriage, Laura Bush put it bluntly: "I think we could."

Yet another Republican (and a pretty influential one at that) has come out for marriage equality. In fact, now the spouses of the last two GOP candidates for President (George W. Bush and John McCain) support marriage equality. Imagine that. Perhaps we should start working on Ann Romney or Todd Palin ....

The video of Laura Bush on Larry King Live is below. But it is pretty amazing that Laura Bush, Cindy McCain, Steve Schmidt, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dick Cheney and David Brooks can all be down with gay marriage, yet the progressive leader of the free world still can't come to grips with the subject. It's a little hard not to be disappointed by that fact.
